MIKONO means hands… hands that till the soil, that pick the fruits. Hands that hold each other and form a whole.

Mikono Young Jackfruit

We are pleased to announce that from now on Gloe & Zeitz the official seller of the brand MIKONO. MIKONO is a story of enterprising women, who have harnessed the power of Africa to make healthy and innovative products. The sun, the red earth, the traditional food forest, a community that shares and contributes. We will start with Jackfruit and hope to further expand the product range in the course of next year.

At the moment, it is difficult for African farmers to enter the European market. It’s expensive and complicated for a variety of reasons. However, exporting often makes it possible to invest in growth, efficiency, certification and personnel locally. Which ultimately makes it possible to compete with the rest of the world. Export also benefits the local market and farmers in receiving a fair price for their product.

What exactly is young jack fruit?

Jackfruit is a spiny fruit which grows on trees native to Asia, South America and Africa. The tree needs little resources to grow, but its fruit is bountiful and helps Mother Earth in creating a sustainable future. Jackfruit is known as a meat substitute due to its structure: the young flesh absorbs flavor well, allowing to easily season and marinate the fruit.

Additionally young Jackfruit is a rich source of fiber, starch, vitamins B6 and C and potassium.

Ideal for flexitarians and vegetarians!

Recipe from Rashida

Samosa is a classic South Asian dish that was introduced to the Horn of Africa by Indian migrants. Today, Samosa is a popular dish all over the world. It’s incredibly tasty and can easily be adapted to locally inspired ingredients. Samosa is a convenient snack or appetizer.

Rashida gives her own East African twist to Jackfruit Samosa. Also worth noting… Rashida’s Jackfruit Samosa is completely Vegan! Rashida has struck a perfect balance between the basic flavors of the jackfruit and the authentic Swahili Samosa with this recipe.
